5-5-20 Activities and Links

Reading

Session 2: "Series Book Readers Pay Attention to How Characters Respond to Problems."

1. Today I want you to teach you that the way a person responds to trouble says a lot about who that person is. In real life and in stories, too, the way a person responds to trouble (to a problem) gives clues as to what kind of person this is.

2. Click on the link and read the *purple pages*. Watch the video on the second purple slide for today’s reading lesson. Video: Pay attention to how characters respond to problems

When you read today:
*Flag spots in your book where the character is encountering a problem.
*Jot ideas on your flag what this says about your character.
*If you finish reading your first book in your series, feel free to move on to your next book.

Writing

Again this week, we are going to work on producing only ONE high quality piece of writing. (*Due to the particular assignment, this week also presents an option to write additional pieces of you would like or need.) Since Mother’s Day is on Sunday, the focus of your opinion will be on writing about a special lady in your life. Write your opinion about this question: ***"What special woman in your life deserves an award?"*** *Please note: This writing could be for any woman in your life who deserves an award! If you would like, you are more than welcome to create additional writing pieces to include your mom, step-mom, grandma, aunt, family friend, teacher, etc. 1. Watch the video of examples of "Opinion Writing from 2nd graders at Suamico School!"
Student Examples & Review Beginning 2. Today, you will only focus on the beginning of your writing piece. (**Please do not go ahead.**) 3. Your BEGINNING paragraph should have these two parts: Make sure your beginning includes a hook to lead your readers into your topic. (see Review Hook/Lead Examples: Hook/Lead Examples )
4.Next, write your opinion statement after your hook/lead. (Hint: The reasons will be the “why” you think this person deserves an award. Save those thoughts for tomorrow’s writing!) **Feel free to make this a special piece of writing to give to that special lady on Mother’s Day! You could use your choice of paper or even Book Creator for this writing piece! Jazz it up by adding other details each day that you add on another part of opinion writing. Use this new resource page for all of the videos, charts, and examples we’ve used so far for Opinion Writing! (Opinion Writing Resources)
