5-12-20 Activities

5-12-20 Reading
Reading: Session 3: Series Book Readers Notice Similarities in Their Characters across a Series 1. Click on the link below and read the green pages. Watch the video on the second green slide for today’s reading lesson: Readers Notice Similarities in Characters
2. Today in the video you learned that when you read a bunch of books across a series, sometimes you'll notice things about the character that are the same in book after book. Sometimes though, characters might surprise you and do things that are different. 3. When you read today: *Flag spots in your book where the character acts the same as he or she did in the first book you read or in another place in the book you are reading. You can also flag spots where the character surprised you and acted differently than in other books. *If you finish reading your first book in your series, feel free to move on to your next book. Remember, our focus is on gathering things we notice about our star character across books in a series to understand them better!

Writing
Opinion Writing:

***Writers share their “opinions” of books, in the hopes of convincing others to read the books they love!

Again this week, we are going to write only one high quality piece of writing.  Each day will focus on a different part so that you can put more time and effort into each part.

Today,  focus on the Beginning of your writing piece. (**Please do not go ahead.**) Watch the short video of Miss Mikle showing you the difference between weak beginnings and Awesome Beginnings! Book Recommendations - Beginnings!

Write your opinion about this question:  What book or series do you think other 2nd Graders “Must Read”? (Hint:  What book or series do you think is the best?)

Your BEGINNING paragraph should have these two parts:

  • A Hook to Lead your readers into your topic.
*Really put some thought into your Hook/Lead!  (Hint: Think about what you like about the book.  Does it make you laugh, have suspenseful parts, interesting characters, etc? )

  • Next, write your opinion statement after your hook/lead.

When you are finished, reread your writing, but do NOT submit your writing to SeeSaw.  (You will submit it on Thursday or Friday when you are finished.)

*If you need to look at some examples of Beginnings, check out the link:  Opinion Writing Resources For 2nd Grade. The bottom row has both teacher and student examples.
