Reading Growth Spurt

In reading, we have been working hard on setting up expectations and routines for our Reader's Workshop. Our first reading unit is on the "Second Grade Reading Growth Spurt." We have learned that second graders grow as readers, just like they do in all aspects of life. They have also learned that in 2nd grade, they decide HOW they read. When they read a book, they can look for clues within the book as to how the book should be read. They also got to practice listening to their own fluency with this skill using "whisper phones." They did a great job!

Tools for a Great Year!

Today, the 2nd graders talked about the things that go into making a great school year. We discussed friendships, grit, positive attitudes, kindness, being responsible, coming to school prepared, having rested bodies, etc. Afterwards, they got busy and made "tool kits for a great year!" I can't wait to hang them up in our hallway!

Here are some great examples:

First Week Updates

The 2nd graders are continuing to have a great first week of school. Today, we continued to build a sense of community within our classroom. We did a few ice breaker activities and played name games. We also spent some time going over more routines and procedures. In Social Studies, we are learning about Citizenship. The 2nd graders have begun to learn about what a citizen is and how they can be positive members of their community. In math, I had the 2nd graders write their numbers from 1-120 today. They did a great job! If you're looking for something to work on at home, I would recommend practicing having your child write their numbers past 100 and their 9's at home. :)

The 2nd graders also had their first "World Culture" class today with Mrs. Allen. I'm so excited for them to participate in this new class our district is offering to the students! Be sure to ask your 2nd grader about it tonight at home.

"Perfect" Classmates

Today, we read the book, "David Goes To School" and talked about what character traits we look for in good classmates. The 2nd graders did a great job!

First Day Fun!

We had a great first day of 2nd grade yesterday! We spent time learning about each other with name games and partnership activities. We also got rid of our first day "Jitters" by reading the book, "First Day Jitters," writing Jitter Juice recipes and drinking "Jitter Juice." :)
