5-26-20 Activities

2nd Graders & Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! We sure got lucky with great weather! :) I wanted to give you all a heads-up on changes for the next two weeks. All 2nd grade students will be given only two assignments each day: Science and Math. There will be no formal lessons for Reading and Writing. Instead, both will be done naturally within the Science lessons. (We've got some fun lessons planned for the unit we missed on Life Cycles.) Next week will be the last week we'll be working in our Math workbook. After that, students will be learning about fractions in a fun way! As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

I hope you all have a wonderful week,

Ms. Anderson

Friday Catch up!

Friday, May 22 - CATCH-UP DAY!
MUST DO- DO ALL
Reading:
* This week you focused on author’s craft… things that authors do on purpose to make their writing look or sound a certain way. You even thought about the lesson the author wants you to learn from the story! You are definitely getting ready for 3rd grade with all of that great thinking about your reading!

* If you completed the assigned reading activities for the week, sometime today or this weeked, read for at least 20 minutes from any book of your choice. You can even read books on Epic or other online resources.
Math:
* This week you worked on subtracting from 3 and 4-digit numbers and explaining how you solved them.

* If you completed the assigned math pages this week (pages 335-336 and 339-342), spend time today or this weekend practicing math facts or playing a math fact game.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
*Keep in mind, you need to know your basic math facts of addition and subtraction by the time you enter 3rd Grade.   Your goal as a 2nd grader is to be able to do 30 problems in 3 minutes!

***You keep doing those math facts now and over the summer and you’ll be in great shape for 3rd Grade!  (Hint:  Knowing your addition and subtraction facts will help you greatly with understanding the multiplication and division concepts!)
Writing:
1. Be sure you have finished the piece of opinion writing you did for the book or book series you think every second grader must read!

  • Read it over carefully in order to catch careless mistakes in capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Be sure to compare your piece of writing with the OREO Checklist to make sure you have all the parts!

  • *Don’t forget to share it with me on SeeSaw!

***Use this new Opinion Writing Resources for 2nd Grade for all of the videos, charts, and examples we’ve used so far for learning about Opinion Writing!

5-21-20 Activities

Reading: Unit 4 Session 12: Authors Plan Their Story Endings

* You have been learning different  ways that authors get “crafty” with their writing. Today you will learn one more way that you can become an expert on author’s craft.
1. Watch the video where Mrs. Bender explains how authors plan their story endings so readers can learn lessons from the story.

2. Continue to notice the author’s craft in the book you read today. When you finish your book, ask…
*Why did the author end the book this way?
*What lesson am I supposed to learn?
****If you are not close to finishing your book, you can choose to reread the ending of a book you already finished OR read a shorter book today.
3. Post to SeeSaw your ideas about what lesson you think the author wants you to learn from the story.

If you need a refresher on literary language, use  the link below to see some:

Math:
Unit 6 Lesson 10:

Subtract from Numbers with Zeros

*Today you will observe the top number more closely to decide if you need to ungroup!  This is especially important when you need to subtract from a place value that has a zero!  (“You can’t take anything from zero… UNGROUP!)

1.Turn to page 341 in your math workbook. Watch the video and do the problems along with Miss Mikle. Math U6.10 Subtract from Numbers with Zeros.

2. Do page 342. Make proof drawings only for numbers 6, 8, and 10.

3.  Record yourself on SeeSaw explaining the Check Understanding.

4. When you have finished the whole page, submit a Good picture to SeeSaw.

Opinion Writing:

This week you’ve been writing your opinion to this question: What is your opinion about something you could change at Suamico Elementary School? Today’s focus is on the Ending and polishing your writing so that it is your best piece of opinion writing yet!  Follow the steps to make sure you have everything you need:

1.Reread what you’ve written for your beginning and middle. Take a moment to fix any spelling errors & make sure you have correct punctuation.

2. Write your ending.  Remember, it should be one or more sentences that brings your piece of writing to a close. Do this by restating your point of view in some way with a final thought or feeling.  (Example: “Clearly, I believe that Suamico Elementary should have a longer lunch time as it is important for children to eat slowly and take time to socialize.”

3. Polish your piece of writing.  Remember, this should be your best piece of opinion writing yet! Use the OREO format checklist below to make sure you included ALL the parts of opinion writing. You might also want to practice reading it aloud to a sibling, pet, or adult before submitting it. One of the easiest ways to spot errors is to read over your work before saying it’s done. Remember our phrase, “When you’re done, you’ve just begun!”

4. Share your opinion writing with me on SeeSaw. I can’t wait to read it!
Double-Stuffed OREO Format for Opinion Writing:

Beginning:

____Do you have a Hook or Lead sentence before your opinion statement?

____Do you have a sentence stating your opinion?
Middle:

____Do you have a sentence that gives a reason?

____Do you have a sentence that explains that reason?

____Do you have a sentence that gives a second reason?

____Do you have a sentence that explains that reason?
End:
____Did you bring your piece of writing to a close by restating your opinion with a final thought or feeling sentence?

Bonus:
_____Did you use cool transition words to connect the parts and help the piece flow?

***You should have at least 7 sentences!

5-20-20 Activities

Hi 2nd Graders! The sun is supposed to shine today! I hope you are able to spend some time outside. I sure do miss all of you!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Opinion Writing:
Remember that this week you are writing only one high quality piece of writing.  Each day will focus on a different part so that you can put more time and effort into each part!

*Today you will  focus on writing the middle of your opinion piece of writing! (**Please do not go ahead.**)

  1. Re-watch the video of Miss Mikle showing you the difference between “Weak and Awesome Middles” of opinion writing. (Make sure you make this apply to our new prompt.)

  1. Reread the Hook/Lead and opinion statement that you wrote yesterday to this prompt: What is your opinion about something that could be a positive change at Suamico?

  1. Now you need to support your opinion with reasons and details/evidence. *Remember, your middle needs at least two paragraphs.

  1. Paragraph 1:  *Write a sentence that tells one reason to support your opinion about something that you think could be a positive change at Suamico. Then explain that reason!

  1. Paragraph 2: State another reason to support your opinion about something that you think could be a positive change at Suamico. Then explain that reason.

4. Read over your work when you’re done.  You do NOT need to submit it to SeeSaw until the final day/part of writing (Thursday).

***Use this Opinion Writing Resources for 2nd Grade for all of the videos, charts, and examples we’ve used so far for learning about Opinion Writing!

Reading: Author’s Craft (Part 2)
Today you will continue paying attention to what the author is doing on the page… the author’s craft.

1. Watch the video and listen as Mrs. Bender explains two more ways that authors use words in a special way to make their stories even better.

2. Today when you read in your series book…
  • Notice places where the author uses literary language and remember to think, “What does this really mean?”
  • Pay attention to punctuation and special print the author uses to bring the story to life
  • Use a Post-it note to flag the author’s craft that you notice.

3. Take a picture of some of the literary language and special print that you noticed and submit it to SeeSaw.

Math:
Unit 6 Lesson 9 Continued:

Subtract From 1000

*Today you will need to ungroup 3 times in order to subtract!  That’s what happens when you subtract a number from 1000!

1.Turn to page 340 in your math workbook. Watch the video and do the problems along with Miss Mikle. Math U6.9 Subtracting from 1000

2. Finish the last 4 problems on your own.

3. Submit page 340 to SeeSaw.
