Reminders
Here are a few updates and reminders:
*Our November Scholastic book order is due this Friday, November 22nd. If you would like to keep your orders a secret or surprise, please send me an e-mail. I would be happy to either send the books home in stapled paper bags or leave them in the office for parent pick up.
Our code for ordering online is: Q89TM
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns!
*This Friday, November 22nd is an early release due to the Bay Port football team making it to the State Championship in Madison. Second grade's lunch schedule will change to be from 10:15-10:35. We will NOT be holding recess on Friday. School will be dismissed at 11:45. Please let me or the office know if you have any questions.

*A message from our 3rd graders: A group of third graders at Suamico Elementary are learning how to run a business in their Consumers and Producers unit. This Thursday and Friday they are collecting $1.00 for a bag of popcorn. The popcorn will be delivered to the classrooms on Tuesday, November 26th. The profit made from the sale will be used for fleece material to make tie blankets for an area nursing home. If you are interested in contributing to this cause, please send $1 with your child on Thursday or Friday. Again, the popcorn will be distributed next Tuesday, November 26.
Thanks for your support!

*Thank you again to all of you who have brought in things to be recycled for my daughter Aria's classroom. We will keep collecting things to be recycled for as long as we can. In case you missed it, here is the link to the blog post for more information:
*I sent home a letter earlier this week about our Thanksgiving feast next Tuesday, November 26th with our PAWS Pals. Here is a copy of that letter:
*Thank you to the families who have donated to our Sweetheart Auction basket ("Green Thumb") and/or donated items for the Giving Tree! We appreciate it! If you wish to donate to the Giving Tree, please have items in no later than Wednesday, December 4th. Mrs. Bender, Ms. Mikle and I will deliver all of the items to the Giving Tree after school that day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Phonics and Reading Updates
The 2nd graders are doing a great job with our new phonics unit! They are busy revisiting some of the things they learned in kindergarten and first grade (digraphs, vowels, consonants, etc.) with our "Phonics Professor Words" Guide. They have been busy identifying these words in books and around our room.
They have also learned our new "2nd Grade Chant" to help us get excited about phonics.
We reviewed our long and short vowels today. We even got a phone call about remembering to include a silent "e" on the ends of our words with long vowels! Be sure to ask your 2nd grader for more details on this at home. :)
We are also reviewing our digraphs!
In reading, the 2nd graders are learning about nonfiction/informative books! Today, we learned about looking for more information and details in our stories. We examined pennies closely and talked about all of the details hat might not have noticed before.
Updates
We sure have been busy in 2nd grade lately! Scroll down to see quick updates and photos that show off what we have been up to.
Last week, we welcomed our friends from Ms. Mikle's class next door into our room for the last 45 minutes of the day. The kiddos enjoyed catching up with their old friends and reading a "TIME for Kids" article together!

The 2nd graders sure do love their time playing "Prodigy!" It's a great math website that tracks their progress and gives me updates to how they're doing. They can even plan at home!
The kiddos are doing great in math! They are continuing to work on story problems and focusing on place value.
P.S. Just for fun... I loved KayteJo's shirt this day. :)
Popcorn Sale
Third grade will be having their annual popcorn sale this Thursday and Friday. The popcorn will be distributed to the students who purchase it next Tuesday, November 26th. The third graders will use the money they earn from the popcorn sale to purchase fleece material. They will be using the fleece to make tie blankets that they will then donate to local nursing homes. This is a fantastic project! Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, please feel free to watch their commercial below:

World Culture Update
In World Culture, the 2nd graders are working on two songs. With our mapping unit coming up for Social Studies, I think they are great for the kiddos to practice at home, as well! :) Here are the links:

Recycling Project
As some of you know, I have a daughter named Aria who is currently enrolled in 4K at an HSSD site. Her teacher is brand new and in her first year of teaching. She's doing a fantastic job and I'd love to help her out with a recycling project that I am SO excited about. She sent out an e-mail today asking for families to help by donating plastic lids (marker caps, food lids, etc.), aluminum tabs from cans, and old markers. Please click on the image below to read her letter. If you are interested, you can have your child bring these items to our 2nd grade classroom and I will bring them over to Aria's 4K room. As always, do not hesitate to contact me with questions and/or concerns! :)

Veteran's Day
Today we celebrated Veteran's Day with some fantastic, authentic learning experiences. We enjoyed learning about some of the Veterans (and active military) in our families! Thank you to all that participated! We also had opportunities to hear from students who have family members involved in the military.
Payton's grandpa came to have lunch with her and talk with our class about his experiences. We got to hear about the different badges on his uniform, see pictures of other uniforms, and hear about where he ate and slept. Thank you so much for coming in!!
Lydia brought in pictures of her mom, Kristin, and her time in the service! We really enjoyed seeing them!
Payton later also showed pictures of her grandpa and uncle!
KayteJo brought in pictures of her uncle and grandpa. We enjoyed hearing about the veterans in your family! Thank you, KayteJo!
Layla brought in some photographs and artifacts from her dad, Josh! We loved seeing the photos and being able to see the badges! Thank you for sharing with us!
Zachary brought in photos of his dad and his older brother. We enjoyed seeing them! Thank you, Zachary!
Weylin has strong roots in the army! His dad and mom both came in to talk with us today. We enjoyed hearing about their time in the army together. We got to learn about the different badges on their uniforms, their helmets and schooling. My favorite part was hearing about Weylin's dad's favorite memory from his time in the army... meeting Weylin's mom. :) Thank you both SO much for coming in!
